IIT Bombay: First Institute To Scrap Face2Face Lectures Till Year-End

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Mumbai has scrapped all face-to-face lectures for the entire next semester, amid the coronavirus pandemic. With this, it has become the first major educational institution in the country to do so.

In an announcement made late Wednesday night, IIT Bombay Director Subhasis Chaudhuri informed that the decision was taken ‘after a long deliberation’.

“The next semester will be taught purely in the online mode so that there is no compromise on the safety and well being of the students,” he added.

The semester for undergraduate and postgraduate courses is scheduled to begin in July. The post also had an appeal for donations for students from economically less privileged families.

This is the first time the 62-year-old institute will start a new academic year without any student on campus. Similar announcements from other IITs are likely to follow.
